Wills for Expatriates

Protecting your estate for your beneficiaries

Great British Wills

A Will is an essential document for expatriates who wish to have any control over their assets. For those with young children, it is a key document appointing guardians and trustees of the children’s inheritance.

Expatriates, by their very nature, have assets in more than one jurisdiction. This makes estate planning more complex as it requires an understanding of the laws applicable to the person by their nationality, the laws applicable to the assets they own by their location and private international law such as double taxation treaties.

English law recognises correctly prepared Wills written by the deceased. However, the UK Government sponsored website Money Advice Service recommends expatriates or those owning foreign assets like property, investments or bank accounts to appoint a qualified professional to draft a Will.

Stuart Porter is founder of Great British Wills in the UAE and we have maintained a close working relationship with this firm for more than 15 years.
